"You can’t please everyone, so proudly exclude people"

Paul Murphy

On page 3 of Derek Siver's book "Anything You Want", one of the themes he introduces is:

"You can’t please everyone,
so proudly exclude people"

You've most likely been doing this yourself already in your personal and professional life.

It usually only becomes a problem when coaches and service providers put together a marketing plan and decide to follow the typical guru advice.

Everything always comes back to: "Get people into your funnel and onto a call as quickly as possible"

Which is the complete opposite of proudly excluding people.

I make my landing pages longer so only interested people join.
I actively tell people to unsubscribe from my emails if they're not interested. I let my personality shine through, hoping it turns people off.

If you wouldn't want to spend time with me in real life, then why would you bother reading these emails?

It's why I have zero interest in playing the volume game. I want to grow my business, make a difference in the world and have happy clients.

Following the typical advice that's based on volume leads to using tactics and strategies that just don't suit me (and probably you) as humans who care about quality.

So, here are some things you can do right away:

  1. Work backwards. Get clear on what you're optimising your entire business for. Me? I simply optimise everything I do for happy customers. That's it. I work backwards from that.

  2. Define your short-term and long-term strategies. Long-term is where the real profit is at. But, of course, we need short-term sales, too. Get clear on activities for both so you can start making progress towards your ultimate goal.

  3. You probably already have an idea of who your ICP (ideal client profile) is. But do you know who you absolutely do NOT want in your business? I know it's simple, but until you have total clarity on who you don't want in your business, you may still be attracting them through messaging and other avenues.

Playing with volume is a dangerous game. You're allowing people to enter your world without first getting through security.

I care about quality. The people here in my world care about making a difference, care about helping others, and care about doing crazy good work.

That's what we're here for.

So, don't be afraid to question what's constantly being promoted.

If it doesn't feel good to you, then figure out a way that does feel good.

There's never just one way to do something. You need to take a look at your options and decide what's right for you.

Don't let someone else make those decisions for you.
